Deepika : Women free to dress according to their wishes
Bollywood celebrities have expressed grief and anger over the brutal gang rape of a para-medical student in the national capital. While the protesters are blaming Bollywood’s vulgar dance moves, lyrics, skimpy outfit, actress Deepika Padukone strongly refuted the claims saying a woman can dress the way she wants.

Following the rape incident, a group of society is blaming the skimpy dressing style for rape cases. Strongly protesting this comment, Deepika Padukone said, “Women are constantly blamed for the way they dress. It is high time that we do something about stopping such crimes. The rules and the laws should become a lot more strict and action needs to be taken swiftly.”

She also said, “Women have the right to dress the way they want. Be it long dresses or short, women can wear whatever they want. Short and skimpy clothes can’t be the reason behind rapes.

Gang rape
Gang rape, also called serial gang rape, group rape, or multiple perpetrator rape in scholarly literature, is the rape of a single victim by two or more violators (typically at least three). Gang rapes are forged on shared identity of the same religion or race. There are multiple motives for the serial gang rapes, such as for sexual entitlement, asserting sexual prowess, war, punishment, and in up to 30% cases for targeting another race or religion.

2012 Delhi gang rape and murder
The 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder case involved a rape and fatal assault that occurred on 16 December 2012 in Munirka, a neighbourhood in South Delhi. The incident took place when Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern, was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus in which she was travelling with her male friend. There were six others in the bus, including the driver, all of whom raped the woman and beat her friend. Eleven days after the assault she was transferred to a hospital in Singapore for emergency treatment but died two days later. The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned, both in India and abroad. Subsequently, public protests against the state and central governments for failing to provide adequate security for women took place in New Delhi, where thousands of protesters clashed with security forces. Similar protests took place in major cities throughout the country. Since Indian law does not allow the press to publish a rape victim’s name, the victim was widely known as Nirbhaya, meaning “fearless”, and her struggle and death became a symbol of women’s resistance to rape around the world.
